National Design Gallery of Saint-Étienne
The famous Lyon-based architectural firm Silt, in collaboration with the acclaimed stage designer and museum designer dUCKS scéno, has undertaken the renovation of the National Design Gallery in Saint-Étienne (Loire). This ambitious project has a construction area of an astonishing 70,000 square meters and a budget of up to 60 million euros. According to a press release issued by the project owner, the gallery is expected to open to the public in 2025.
In September 2023, the Saint-Étienne Métropole in the Loire department presented to the public the architectural plan for the future National Design Gallery. Located in the heart of the creative district of Design City, the gallery is housed in a historic former imperial war arms factory. After renovation, the gallery will host annual exhibitions of design collections curated by various French cultural institutions, becoming an important platform to showcase France’s design strength.
The project stood out among many competing proposals and attracted much attention because it skillfully retains the historical essence of the building while subtly integrating modern elements.
